I drove a G88 and the only difference to the F88 that I had after was the G cab had no sleeper. The F88 was and still is my favourite truck, it was so far ahead of its time.
The G88 could be had with day or sleeper cab. Because the front axle had been moved 300mm forward to comply with 'bridge formula' regulations of the time there is no front step. First step is level with bottom of fuel tank behind mudguard, 2nd is the chrome pipe affair.
According to Volvo there were only 50 F88s in Australia, all imported 'UK type' identified by the wider G89 grille and TD100B motor. However, I have seen pics of others soit remains a mystery. Go to new Australian Volvo Heritage page on Goldenoldiestruckclub.com web site if you know more about the mystery F88s in Australia.
Kevin, all of the 50 UK spec F88's had disc wheels and 16sp gearbox with chassis No in 47xxx series, so perhaps that one is a G88 chassis. No series 46xxx or is from another batch & hence my reference to a confused history of the F88 in Australia. Volvo never supplied trucks in Australia with Fuller gearboxes, that being a common modification by drivers when the original wore out.
