This brings back memories for me. When in school, we used to gather when a queen mary trailer passed by.

I know of one in the last few years to sqeeze through the arches on the Menai Bridge over to Anglesey, he didn't realise the A55 went all the way to Holyhead, and instead followed the signs for the old A5.

Great memories of a regular collection of glider fuselages and wings from a furniture factory in Burnley, Lancashire throughout the 1940's, as kids we used to watch them being loaded onto RAF Queen Mary's and sheeted over with tarpaulin camoflaged sheets - my Mother worked at the factory "Doping" the cloth covered fuselages with a 5" brush - the only protection from fumes was a cotton Martindale nose mask (Virtually Useless)- she contracted Bronchitis - Thanks for showing this photograph, a real blast from the past.

My grandfather Albert Hackshaw drove a QM for Huntings recovering crashed planes during WW2. His lorry caught fire with a plane on the back, apparently he was photographed near Rugby for a local paper.
My mum also told me he met Douglas Bader at Croydon airport which is near where they lived, and he ended up driving him around when he drank quite a bit. I'd love to hear from anyone who had any connection?

My father, Harry Potter had the job of collecting dozens of Q M trailers from all over the UK in the late '50s. They were taken back to the Taskers factory for complete overhauls and put back into service with the Air Ministry. The tractor unit he used was a Bedford RL model fitted with a Scammell coupling rather than a fifth wheel. This RL was the first of its model ever sold through the surplus sales at Ruddington. It had suffered damage in a accident with only 630 miles on the clock and the auction price was £650. A new cab, complete with all fittings and painted cost £115 from Vauxhall Motors at Dunstable and Harry had it back on the road within a week of fetching it home from Ruddington. It's registration mark was TPO 950 and it served as a artic timber carriage for a number of years

My dad drove one of these in the 1940s in the RAF. His name was Eric Mitchell. Of course when he was alive I never asked any questions about his service.
