Ex-Military Road Trains

Some of the trucks we used left over from the war. Caption reads . . .

"Old friend Peter Ritchie with some of the ex-military disposal vehicles we used after WW2. They were lighter and less powerful than the Diamond ‘Ts’, powered with the ‘J’ series Cummins diesel. The GMC 6x6, two and one half ton were popular as well, all pulling loads far exceeding their manufacturers design. All trailers, sometimes up to 7, were without brakes and we never used safety chains. I remember as a kid going out into the Alice Springs hills to help out Baldock’s Diamond ‘T’ road train when 4 trailers broke loose going up a steep hill, the sheer weight being too much for the tow bar."
